Freezing weather sweeping the United States has seen many communities in the Great Lakes area plunged into chaos by huge snowfall.

Cars have been banned from treacherous roads and eight deaths have been attributed to the cold snap.

And the Sabres confirmed on Thursday, that Friday's scheduled fixture at the First Niagra Center will have to be rearranged.

A statement read: "Due to the continuing weather-related difficulties in the Greater Buffalo area and out of respect for the fans of the Sabres, Friday's game between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center, NHL Game No. 291, has been postponed.

"A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed."

Buffalo's NFL franchise, the Bills, are scheduled to be in action at their Ralph Wilson Stadium home against the New York Jets.

That clash is yet to be cancelled due to the adverse weather, with the team claiming they will look to shift up to 220,000 tonnes of snow in an attempt to get the game on.

But Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, believes attempting to clear the pitch and stadium's surrounding area is a futile exercise.

"Everybody would love to see a Bills game go forward, but I think even more, everybody wants to make sure public safety comes first," Cuomo said.

"At this point in time, doing what we have to do with the driving ban and everything we just said -- staying off the roads -- would make a Bills game impractical.

"So if you ask me today, right now, my two cents would be it would be impractical to do the game because it could jeopardise public safety."
