Double points will be on offer at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 23 to ensure the drivers' championship goes down to the wire.

The new rule has created a scenario where Nico Rosberg could win the title with less than half the number of race wins as Mercedes team-mate Hamilton, who tops the standings by 17 points heading into this weekend's United States GP.

But Blundell, who spent four seasons racing in F1, thinks the Briton will ensure all of the controversy dissipates by wrapping up the championship in the USA on Sunday or Brazil the following week.

"I think the pressure has been on him for most of the season. As we go through that mid-sector now, Lewis has definitely stepped up to the plate," said the 48-year-old.

"Several wins under his belt in the mid-season, which has now put Nico Rosberg on the backfoot. War of words, some psychology, all part of the process.

"But I think now it's more for Nico to really lose, because if he doesn't start to get some more grand prix wins under his belt, there's definitely going to be that loss there in points.

"It could all go down to the wire with double points in the last race. I'm not a great fan of that if I'm really honest with you, and I think it could be a little bit falsified in the outcome, but at the same time the way things are going, I think Lewis is going to have it pretty much wrapped up by then."
