Chicago forward Hossa became the 80th player in NHL history to reach the milestone after scoring a goal and providing an assist at the Canadian Tire Centre.

"It's such a privilege to be one of these 80 great players to do this milestone and it doesn't get better than this doing it where I started," said the former Senators player, who has 466 goals and 534 assists in 17 seasons.

"It means lots to me. A big thanks goes to all the players tonight who helped me to achieve that and also all the players through my career."

The match was sent into overtime after Senators centre Mika Zibanejad made it 4-4 with two minutes remaining in the third period.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the additional stanza but the Blackhawks triumphed in the shoot-out thanks to Patrick Shark, who was the only player to score after five previous misses.

Chicago goaltender Scott Darling made 19 saves, while fellow goalie Craig Anderson stopped 22 shots for Ottawa.

Stanley Cup champions the Los Angeles Kings were shutout 3-0 by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Kings were no match for the in-form Penguins, who scored twice in the opening period and once in the third.

Chris Kunitz was the star for the Penguins, who won their third game in a row, netting twice.

Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had 36 saves, with 16 of those coming in the third stanza.

In other results, Nathan Mackinnon scored twice and goalie Semyon Varlamov made 40 saves as the Colorado Avalanche crushed the New York Islanders 5-0.

The Boston Bruins were 3-2 victors over the Buffalo Sabres via Brad Marchand's game-winning goal in overtime.

Shoot-out goals to Mikko Koivu and Jason Pominville lifted the Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 win against the San Jose Sharks.

The Anaheim Ducks were blanked 2-0 by the St Louis Blues and the New Jersey Devils downed the Winnipeg Jets 2-1.

Steven Stamkos' two goals inspired the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers, the Florida Panthers accounted for the Arizona Coyotes 2-1, while the Montreal Canadiens lost 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks.
