Why Ryan Giggs trip to Turkey to scout on Majeed Waris was a bizarre move from Manchester United

On Monday night,  Mirror Football revealed the story  that Louis van Gaal had sent his  Manchester United  assistant Ryan Giggs to watch Ghanaian forward Abdul Majeed Waris play for Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The forward, who made a name for himself last season when he scored nine goals in 16 games as Valenciennes tried to battle for their place in Ligue 1, moved from  Spartak Moscow  to Trabzonspor in the summer.

He had to leave France after VAFC were relegated to Ligue 2, there was interest from the likes of Lille and Saint-Etienne, but his wage demands ruled them out.

News linking Waris with a move to Manchester United has raised some eyebrows from those who have watched him both this season and last season.

It's not that he's a bad player, it's just he's not at the sort of level that Manchester United should be aiming for if they want to challenge high up the Premier League table.

Waris had been previously linked with both Everton and Newcastle United in the summer, which is around the right level.

Perhaps if he had been excelling for Trabzonspor in the Turkish league, you could understand this move from Van Gaal, but six appearances, four starts and no goals isn't exactly head turning form.

The story of Waris is a very interesting tale. He studied at Hartpury College's sports program and played for Forest Green Rovers before moving to Swedish side BK Hacken. After scoring 23 goals in 29 games during his last season in Sweden, Spartak paid €2.9 million to take him to Russia, but he has hardly featured.

It is extremely unlikely that Manchester United would make a move for the Ghana international.

It could have been a trip that was planned for a number of reasons, but with reports liking the Reds to Waris, it's a story that makes very little sense.

If the 23-year-old was at the end of his contract in the summer, or looking for a move, perhaps there would be the option to sign and then sell on for a profit in a couple of years, but he only moved to Turkey four months ago.

Nothing around this link adds up and it would be a huge surprise if anything came from it.

Is Abdul Majeed Waris good enough for Manchester United?
