OCT 29, 2014 LISTEN

In his first match since the birth of his first child, Djokovic triumphed 6-3 6-4 over world number 24 Kohlschreiber at the indoor hard-court tournament.

Djokovic has won five titles this year, including Wimbledon, and is looking to build some momentum ahead of his return to London for the ATP World Tour Finals in November.

The 27-year-old is facing a battle in London to stay ahead of Roger Federer in the race to finish 2014 as the ATP's highest-ranked player.

But one week after wife Jelena gave birth to boy Stefan, Djokovic said he was proud of the newest addition to his family.

"It feels great. It's different, obviously," Djokovic told Sky Sports when asked about being a father.

"I'm trying to take as much positive energy as I can from what's happened in the past few weeks. I'm very proud to be a father and I'm very proud of my wife for handling the birth in a great way.

"She's back home recovering now, with our little boy. This was my first match as a father and it can only inspire me to play my best tennis."

Djokovic stormed to a 5-1 lead against Kohlschreiber at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy but failed to serve out the set at the first instance.

The Serb did so in the ninth game, after Kohlschreiber saved a set point in the previous game, and Djokovic built on his lead early in the second, breaking the German in the opening game.

With the early break, Djokovic was in control throughout the second set eventually serving out the match after one hour 25 minutes.

Djokovic will play Gael Monfils next after the Frenchman defeated Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-1 6-4.

Czech world number five Tomas Berdych had to survive a comeback from local Adrian Mannarino to reach the third round, eventually winning 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2.

After Berdych took the first set, Mannarino forced a tie-break and never trailed during it to level the match.

But Mannarino dropped serve all four times during the third set as Berdych upped the ante and crushed the Frenchman in two hours 23 minutes.

Berdych will play the winner of Sam Querrey and Feliciano Lopez in the next round with that pair set to play on Wednesday.

Fernando Verdasco upset French 15th seed Gilles Simon 6-3 3-6 6-4, while Jeremy Chardy won an all-French contest over Kenny De Schepper 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4), Spain's Tommy Robredo downed Vasek Pospisil of Canada 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-5) and Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas advanced after Leonardo Mayer retired, when trailing 7-6 (7-3) 1-0.

French qualifier Lucas Pouille stunned Ivo Karlovic 6-1 6-4, South Africa's Kevin Anderson defeated Santiago Giraldo 6-4 7-6 (10-8) and Belgian David Goffin prevailed 6-4 6-3 against Lukas Rosol.
