Why Adu- Asare Wept
25.10.2014 LISTEN

Mr. Gabriel Adu-Asare
There was yet another drama at Monday's sitting of the Presidential Commission of inquiry investigating ghana's shambolic performance in this year 's world Cup finals in Brazil.

The Chairman of the Protocol and Supporters Welfare Committee, Mr. Gabriel Adu-Asare, wept before the committee Monday.

Asked by host of Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem, Captain Smart, why he, like the Minister for Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, wept at the Commission's hearing, Mr. Adu-Asare said, 'Sometimes you can't control your tears.'

He said he was saddened by media reports that his committee misappropriated and embezzled money meant for organizing the airlifting of football fans to Brazil.

He said unlike in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where money was set aside by government for the preparation towards the games, in 2014 there was nothing like that.

The committee, he said, had to raise money from corporate organizations and any money realized was paid into accounts managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

'The Ministry was the spending officers. Money wasn't in our hands so there was no money to steal,' he said.

The former Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency in Accra said he was extremely hurt by the false reports which he said were designed to malign him and other members of the Protocol and Supporters Welfare Committee.

He said the committee failed to execute its mandate primarily because government did not make funds available for the execution of its projects.

The general public, he insisted, must stop bastardising the committee members.
