The two teams are struggling financially and have clinched just two points between them in the 2014 season - both of which were earned by Marussia.

Caterham have this week entered administration, while Marussia are still coming to terms with Jules Bianchi's accident in Japan three weeks ago, which left the Frenchman in hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Ecclestone revealed on Saturday that neither team will feature in Texas, meaning just nine teams will contest the race.

"Neither of those two teams are going to go to America," he said, in quotes reported by Sky Sports News.

It would appear likely that both teams will also miss the Brazilian Grand Prix, which follows seven days after the race in Texas, with cars going directly to South America from the States.
