The Spurs will open the NBA regular season by hosting the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday but head into the game with a 2-5 win-loss record in pre-season, including four defeats in their past five games.

The Houston Rockets trumped San Antonio 96-87 on Friday, blitzing the Spurs in the first half and then holding on after the main break.

James Harden (25 points) top-scored for the Rockets in Texas, while Terrence Jones claimed a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, as Houston finished their pre-season with a 6-2 record.

The Rockets will also start the 2014-15 season on Tuesday as they will travel to California to face the Los Angeles Lakers.

For San Antonio, Tim Duncan (11 points, 10 rebounds) was typically strong and Marco Belinelli led the scoring with 19 points.

The Spurs will face an in-form team next week with Dallas having thrashed the Orlando Magic 117-92 on Friday.

Chandler Parsons (24 points) shone for the Mavericks as they made it four wins in six matches in pre-season for an overall record of 4-4, while the Lakers lost 93-92 to the Sacramento Kings.

The Minnesota Timberwolves also claimed a tight win, edging out the Chicago Bulls 113-112, while the Toronto Raptors defeated the New York Knicks 83-80 and the Phoenix Suns won 105-100 over the Utah Jazz.

In other results, the Miami Heat prevailed 104-98 against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Denver Nuggets 119-112 and the Portland Trail Blazers claimed a 99-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
