A statement on the PGA of America's website slammed Bishop's posts as "insensitive gender-based statements", and the golf body banished him from attending PGA Championships or Ryder Cups.

Bishop tweeted about Poulter's book 'No Limits', in which the Englishman criticised Nick Faldo: "Faldo's record stands by itself. Six majors and all-time RC points. Yours vs. His? Lil girl."

He followed up his remark on Facebook, posting: "Really? Sounds like a little school girl squealing during recess. C'MON MAN!"

PGA chief executive Pete Bevacqua slammed Bishop's comments.

"The PGA of America understands the enormous responsibility it has to lead this great game and to enrich lives in our society through golf," Bevacqua said in a statement.

"We must demand of ourselves that we make golf both welcoming and inclusive to all who want to experience it, and everyone at the PGA of America must lead by example."

PGA of America vice-president Derek Sprague will take the reins as president until November 22, when a vote will be held at their annual meeting.

Sprague is tipped to get the role permanently, and become the 64th president, after Bishop's reign ended one month shy of his two-year tenure expiring.

"The Members and Apprentices of the PGA of America must uphold the highest standards and values of the profession, as well as the manner in which we conduct ourselves at all times," Sprague said.

"We apologise to any individual or group that felt diminished, in any way, by this unacceptable incident."
