The defenseman suffered the injury during the first period of the Bruins' 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli is hopeful of getting Chara back inside a month, but said that was optimistic.

"This is completely different, separate, isolated from the other ligaments that are more critical in the manoeuvring of the knee, so good news is, it's isolated to that ligament [in the back of his left knee]," Chiarelli told a news conference.

"Bad news is he's out 4-6 weeks. Might be a little earlier than four weeks, but a conservative time frame would be 4-6 weeks."

In some good news for the Bruins, Chara is unlikely to require surgery.

Chiarelli said Chara's absence hurt his team, who sit with a 4-5 win-loss record and fifth in the Atlantic division.

"Well, it's obviously a blow," he said.
"He's one of the premier defensemen in the league, but I'd rather have it 4-6 weeks than 4-6 months."
