With the score level 1-1 on aggregate after striker Jonathan Calleri gave Boca a 1-0 second-leg win in Paraguay on Thursday, the last-16 tie was decided from the spot.

And it was there that two-time champions Boca triumphed as goalkeeper Agustin Orion scored a penalty and saved Arturo Aquino's very next spot-kick to send the Argentines through to the quarters.

Boca will face another Paraguayan side, Cerro Porteno, in the last eight of South America's second-tier continental club competition.

Earlier in the night, Capiata appeared in the box seat to reach the next round, protecting a 1-0 first-leg lead at the Estadio Feliciano Caceres.

But Capiata were denied a quarter-final berth after Calleri poked the ball home 16 minutes from time to force the match to penalties, where the visitors ultimately succeeded.
