24.10.2014 LISTEN

The Red Wings trailed 3-1 with less than three minutes remaining but goals from captain Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall levelled proceedings and sent the game into overtime at Joe Louis Arena.

Left wing Abdelkader completed the comeback four minutes into the additional period, scoring from the slot as Detroit consolidated second position in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic division.

The Penguins are fourth in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan division.

"It was the last three minutes to get a couple goals," said Abdelkader. "We don't want to put ourselves in that situation because the chances of that happening are pretty slim.

"I thought we worked hard, battled back, we had a lot of chances in the game, but we found a way there at the end to push it to overtime and got a win. That was a huge two points."

The New York Islanders snapped a two-game slump by trumping the Boston Bruins 3-2.

Second-period goals from Kyle Okposo and Cal Clutterbuck proved to be the difference at TD Garden as the Islanders - top of the Metropolitan - returned to winning ways.

Islanders goaltender Chad Johnston made 30 saves.
The defeat was a double blow for Boston, who lost defenseman Zdeno Chara to an undisclosed injury in the first period.

In other results, Stanley Cup champions the Los Angeles Kings upstaged the Buffalo Sabres 2-0.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick, who stopped 29 shots, earned his 33rd career shutout, eclipsing Rogie Vachon's record by one.

James Neal scored a hat-trick as the Nashville Predators edged the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2.

Neal found the back of the net in each of the three periods for his fifth career hat-trick and back-to-back wins for Nashville, who sit top of the Western Conference's Central division.

Ryan Miller stopped 31 shots to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-1 victory over the St Louis Blues.

The Calgary Flames ran riot, blanking the Carolina Hurricanes for an emphatic 5-0 win.

Minnesota goalie Darcy Kuemper earned his third shutout in four starts this season after the Wild accounted for the Arizona Coyotes 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets prevailed 5-4 against the San Jose Sharks.
