Hashim Amla's 119 led the tourists to 282-9 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui and New Zealand were never in the hunt in the second game of the three-match series.

Faf Du Plessis made 67 as South Africa punished the hosts for putting them in to bat on a wicket they felt would be easier to bat on as the day went on.

That proved to be true, but they slumped to 95-7 and there was no way back despite Luke Ronchi's 79 seeing them all out for 210 in the 47th over.

Vernon Philander (2-27), AB De Villiers (2-28), Imran Tahir (2-32) and Dale Steyn (2-35) guided the South Africans to victory.

Amla, opening the batting, struck his 16th ODI century to put South Africa in complete control, hitting 15 boundaries in the 135-ball innings.

His 113-run second-wicket partnership with Du Plessis set the tourists up.

Captain De Villiers made 37 off 25, while paceman Mitchell McClenaghan (2-49) was the pick of the bowlers.

Steyn, Philander and Morkel ensured New Zealand had little chance in their chase.

Martin Guptill (11), James Neesham (10) and Tom Latham (16) fell in the opening 17 overs to see their side slip to 61-3.

Ronchi and McClenaghan swung to no avail in a 76-run stand for the final wicket, perhaps carrying some momentum into game three on Monday.
