Sports News Out injured: Kane Williamson to remain sidelined for South Africa ODIs
OCT 22, 2014 LISTEN

Williamson sat out Tuesday's first contest of three at Mount Maunganui, which South Africa won by six wickets despite a valiant 99 from New Zealand wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi.

The Black Caps had hoped to welcome back Williamson for the second and third matches against AB de Villiers' side, but will now focus on ensuring the 24-year-old is fit to play in three Tests with Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates next month.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying: "Kane has been ruled out of the rest of the series. Unfortunately, he needs further rehabilitation on his wrist.

"It is not the time of the year where we want to rush him. Once he had a scan, it was pretty clear that he needed rest.

"Kane had a ligament issue. There was a one-off incident where there was a small tear in there. It has been injected and it has recovered. It is pretty much fixed, just needs some rehabilitation.

"He batted the last couple of days without a huge amount of discomfort but [it is] not something we are going to rush back."

Hesson expects Williamson and fellow injury victim Ross Taylor (calf) to be ready to face Pakistan.

Asked if he was confident of Williamson making the trip, he replied: "Very confident. Like I said, we are not risking him and we are not risking Ross either. It is a huge season for us and it is the first part so we are not going to compromise the rest of the season.

"Ross is progressing well. He batted the last few days, he is up here with us. There should be no reason why he won't jump on the plane to Dubai."
