Carlisle United lost a seven-goal thriller at Brunton Park despite goals from Kyle Dempsey, Brad Potts and debutant Derek Asamoah.

The Blues fell to their first Brunton Park defeat under Keith Curle after a remarkable contest.

Asamoah, who signed a short-term deal before the game, came off the bench at half-time and reduced the arrears to 4-3.

But United couldn't find an equaliser despite throwing the kitchen sink at the second-placed visitors in the closing stages, and remain 21st in League One.

Manager Keith Curle made four changes to his line-up – but saw Damien McCrory open the scoring for Burton after just five minutes.

McCrory was not even in the visitors starting line-up, but had to come off the bench in the second minute due to an injury to George Taft.

He wasted little time in making an impact, striking a stunning first-time shot from the left past Dan Hanford from 25 yards.

Burton's fifth-minute lead was cancelled out just seven minutes later by teenager Dempsey.

He finished from close-range, after Antony Sweeney had headed Potts' cross against the post.

But then midfielder Lee Bell was allowed to run unchallenged through midfield in the 27th minute before beating Hanford from outside the box for Gary Rowett's side.

Things quickly got worse for Carlisle as Jacob Blyth scored on the counter-attack after Burton pounced on sloppy midfield play.

And Alex MacDonald made it 4-1 via a deflection after rounding Danny Grainger.

United were being cut apart by the visitors, before Potts' fine left-footed strike on the stroke of half-time gave United a glimmer.

Curle made two half-time subs, introducing 33-year-old Asamoah and Mark Beck in place of Georg Iliev and Gary Dicker.

And Asamoah struck on 65 minutes, beating keeper Jon McLaughlin to a ball on the edge of the box before stroking home.

United piled crosses into the box for the remaining period, with former trialist Asamoah impressive, but couldn't find a way through.

Visiting striker Stuart Beavon was sent off during injury-time, receiving a second yellow card for dissent.

Danny Grainger, Antony Sweeney, Sean O'Hanlon and Matty Robson had come into the starting line-up, with Troy Archibald-Henville, Patrick Brough, Dave Symington and Beck left out.

Steven Rigg again missed the game through injury.
