The New South Wales Waratahs coach, who led his team to the Super Rugby title this year, was unveiled on Wednesday.

Cheika is set to lead the under-fire Wallabies on their tour of Europe, which begins with a clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham on November 1.

"I'm so lucky and blessed to be able to have this opportunity," Cheika said.

"I never got to play for the Wallabies so to have the opportunity to coach them is touching to me, and inspires me to do my best.

"We have to unite together to do the very best for our supporters.

"Rugby supporters want to be proud of their team all the time."

He will remain in charge of the Waratahs in 2015.
A turnaround in fortunes is much-needed ahead of next year's World Cup after the Wallabies won just two of their six Rugby Championship matches.

McKenzie resigned on Saturday, announcing his decision immediately after the Wallabies' 29-28 loss to the All Blacks in Brisbane.

It comes after a tumultuous period for Australia in the wake of the Kurtley Beale text scandal and losses to South Africa and Argentina.
