The world number one was set to take his place in the BMW Masters and WGC-HSBC Champions fields - both events in Shanghai - in October/November, but he pulled out on Monday.

McIlroy is expected to return for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, starting November 20 - with the Race to Dubai winner crowned at the culmination of the tournament.

"I'm going to need time away from tournament golf to prepare for the trial over my legal dispute with Horizon Sports Management," he said in a statement.

"The court-directed mediation process failed over the weekend to resolve the issue."

McIlroy is suing former agency Horizon Sports Management Ltd, along with Gurteen Ltd and Canovan Management Services, for allegedly forcing the then 22-year-old into conceding "excessive commissions" in his contract.

Horizon are counter-suing McIlroy for breach of contract and loss of commissions, and an out-of-court settlement has failed to come to fruition.

Accordingly, McIlroy will be called upon to the witness stand in a Dublin court in February.
