Sports News England senior squad: Sturridge left out as Shelvey and Clyne win call-ups
OCT 2, 2014 LISTEN

Nathaniel Clyne  has been handed his first senior England call-up for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

The  Southampton  defender has enjoyed a fine start to the season and now gets his chance to shine at international level, with fellow right-backs Kyle Walker and  Glen Johnson  ruled out through injury.

Hodgson has also recalled Swansea midfielder  Jonjo Shelvey , two years after he won his solitary cap.

There is no place in the 21-man party for  Daniel Sturridge , who has been sidelined since sustaining a thigh injury on international duty last month.

The striker is expected to return for  Liverpool  this weekend but  Brendan Rodgers had called for the 25-year-old to be omitted from England duty and Hodgson has bowed to his demands.

With Manchester United's Luke Shaw dropping to the Under-21s , Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs will provide competition at left-back to  Leighton Baines .

Baines' Everton teammate John Stones has retained his place, as has  Aston Villa  midfielder Fabian Delph, who impressed on his full debut against Switzerland last month.

England squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia is as follows:

F Forster (Southampton), B Foster (West Brom), J Hart (Manchester City), L Baines (Everton), G Cahill ( Chelsea ), N Clyne (Southampton), K Gibbs (Arsenal), P Jagielka ( Everton ), J Stones (Everton), F Delph (Aston Villa), J Henderson (Liverpool), A Lallana (Liverpool), J Milner ( Manchester City ), A Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), J Shelvey (Swansea), R Sterling (Liverpool), A Townsend (Tottenham), J Wilshere (Arsenal), R Lambert (Liverpool), W Rooney ( Manchester United ), D Welbeck ( Arsenal ).
