Sports News Liverpool legend John Barnes not surprised over high European interest in Ghana coaching job
OCT 1, 2014 LISTEN

Liverpool legend John Barnes says the high quality of the Ghana national team is the reason why many European coaches have applied to coach the Black Stars despite bombing out of the 2014 World Cup at the group stage.

The ex-England international has tasked the Ghana Football Association to appoint the best coach for the Black Stars as it seeks to recover from the unimpressive showing at the 2014 World Cup.

The Black Stars coaching post became vacant when the Ghana Football Association parted ways with coach Kwesi Appiah.

Since the post became vacant several foreign coaches including known ones like Patrick Kluivert, Giovanni Trappatoni, Avram Grant and Milovan Rajevac have all applied to coach the Black Stars.

This comes even though the Black Stars bombed out of the World Cup in disgrace at the group stage of the competition in Brazil.

Barnes, who is now a pundit for SuperSport, says the performance of the team and its history in the global tournament is the reason why foreign coaches are interested in coaching the Ghana national team.

“The Ghana team is now attractive based on their achievements in 2006 and 2010, they could have gone far, had it not been the off the field issues in Brazil,” Barnes said.

“So personally I'm not surprised that all these coaches applied for the job.”

“The Ghana Football Association should appoint a competent coach to lead the team for future assignments. If that is done, it will develop and enhance more talents in the country,” Barnes added.

Maxwell Konadu is in temporary charge of the Black Stars for next week's 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Guinea.
