30.09.2014 LISTEN

Former captain of the senior national soccer team of Ghana Charles Kwabena Akunnor has said that players of the Black Stars must render an unqualified apology to President Mahama and the entire nation for their misconduct in Brazil.

"My lord whiles in Brazil everything that we heard was a rumour because we were not closer to the team but if it's through that the players ignored to speak to the President on phone then I think they must apologize," he told the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the 2014 World Cup on Monday.

"My lord regardless of the situation the President is the first gentleman of the State so once he tried to stepped in I think the guys should have giving him that respect. I don't know but if it is true then they have to apologize for what they did and even to the entire nation. I could feel for their frustrations but they shouldn't have gone to that extent," he added.

C.K Akunnor who captained the Black Stars during the 2000 Cup of Nations recalled that he had to visit the then minister of Youth and Sports at his office a day before Ghana played it first match to negotiate on his colleagues behalf but once the minister gave him his word there was nothing they could do done to go and fight on the pitch whiles they solved the situation later.

Charles Akunnor was part of the Black Satellites team that won silver for Ghana at the 1993 World Youth Championship in Australia. He was noted for shooting from 40 yards.

The former Okwahu United and Wolfsburg captain is coaching a local first division side Dreams fc based in the capital.
