Midshipman Agomna Leads Abyssinia To Win Cowbell Inter-Platoon Steeplechase

Midshipman (MID) Agomna Alejandro Kwame led the Abyssinia Platoon to the Overall Best Platoon award by winning the 2014 Cowbell Inter-Platoon Steeplechase Competition held last Friday at the Military Academy in Teshie.

Abyssinia's MID Agomna won the Best Runner by completing the grueling 12 kilometre circuit which included obstacles such as ascending/descending ramps, vertical ladders and heave ups at an impressive time of 44 minutes 40 seconds.

Cadet Ackah Simon of Chiringa finished second in 45 minutes 10 seconds while Cadet Narh Kingsley Asare of Abyssinia claimed third place at a time of 45 minutes 38 seconds.

Cadet Sedziafa Phillipine, the first female to cross the finish line at one hour five minutes and 25 seconds was recognized as the best female and along with the male winners she was rewarded with a certificate and products from Cowbell Ghana Limited.

The event saw 106 participants drawn from the Regular Career Course (RCC) 54 and Short Service Commission /Special Duty (SSC/SD) 52 competing for individual awards as well as team awards for the Ghana Military Academy's (GMA) three Platoons; Abyssinia, Chiringa and Burma.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Michael Fiafor, Chief Training Officer of the GMA the steeplechase race is designed to test the endurance and physical fitness of the cadets.

The Abyssinia Platoon placed first in the Inter-Platoon Steeplechase with a combined time of 872 minutes followed Chiringa Platoon with 981 minutes and Burma Platoon finished third with 1013 minutes.

In an address after the race, the guest of honour, Brigadier General SK Adeti commended the cadets for their excellent performance and the seriousness exhibited during the competition.

He said: “Officers must be physically fit, alert and be team players and from the race I witnessed I am very happy with the fitness and attitude of the cadets, their instructors must be commended for their efforts”.

The event was held as part of activities leading up to the graduation of the RCC 54 and SSC/SD 52 on October 17.
