SEP 17, 2014 LISTEN

Ex Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says he wouldn't have taken Kevin-Prince Boateng along to the 2014 World Cup if he had not played in any of the qualifiers.

The 27-year-old played in his second World Cup finals for Ghana in Brazil having played in the final game of the qualifiers against Egypt where the Black Stars had virtually secured qualification.

Boateng was eventually sacked from the Ghana camp during the World Cup having reached the height of several acts of indiscipline by insulting the then-Black Stars coach.

Appiah in his first interview since being sacked by the Ghana FA who claim the decision was mutual, reveals Boateng would have been left out of his final World Cup squad had he not been involved in the qualifiers.

“I always look at the qualities of the player and whether he will help the nation,” he told Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana.

“To be frank, if he [Kevin-Prince Boateng] had not taken part in the qualifiers, there was no one who would have convinced me to take him to the World Cup.

“He played our last game against Egypt and I thought he had some qualities that could help us at the World Cup.”

Boateng turned out to be the worse nightmare for the entire Ghana delegation at the World Cup where he often acted and passed comments to spite the coach and his entire backroom staff, the management and even at times his teammates.

His eventual sacking from the Black Stars camp at the World Cup thus came as a massive relief to the entire delegation even though members failed to admit it publicly.
