Sunday afternoon is fight showtime as the annual Homowo Boxing tournament comes off at the Gbese Mantse Palace, opposite Ussher Fort in the heart of Accra.
Amateur boxers under the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will engage each other in battling encounters from bantamweight right up to heavyweight as 14 exciting fight matches are set to thrill fight fans as part of the Homowo festival of the Ga people.
This year's boxing competition is held in collaboration with Accra Municipal Authority (AMA) and GAABA of course with top dignitaries including Mayor of Accra, Nii Oko Vanderpuye and traditional rulers like the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayibonte expected to be guests at ringside.
According to Hon. Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme, Chairman of GAABA, the regional amateur boxing controlling body will also use the occasion to select boxers to make up the GAABA team that will travel to an international tournament in Canada next month.
"This is a very important competition for us because it's our boxers who mainly graduate into the Black Bombers (national amateur boxing team) so we look forward to the Homowo boxing programme. Our boxers will have the chance to showcase their talents before a large crowd," Ho. Tackie-Komme told Allsports.com.gh exclusively.
