AUG 2, 2014 LISTEN

Williams is drawn to tackle 2011 US Open champion Stosur in the second round, with the world number one getting a bye through the first round while the Australian takes on a qualifier.

Stosur's last win over Williams came in the final at Flushing Meadows three years ago - a result that delivered the Queenslander her lone major title.

In their two clashes since, Williams has posted straight-sets wins - on the hard courts of Miami in 2012, and the clay of Charleston a fortnight later.

The pair also clashed at the Rogers Cup three weeks prior to their famous New York City battle, with Williams downing Stosur in the final - one of her three title wins at the WTA Premier event.

Williams could also have another final re-match against 2013 runner-up Sorana Cirstea, who is on course to meet the 17-time major winner in the third round.

Cirstea has not played Williams since the American dished up a 6-2 6-0 thrashing in the Toronto decider.

First, the Romanian must get past Wimbledon semi-finalist and 15th seed Lucie Safarova in an interesting first-round affair.

Czech Petra Kvitova - the 2012 champion - is the second seed in Canada, and is in the same section of the draw as the in-form Andrea Petkovic, who is enjoying a strong week at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

Petkovic is seeded 16th, and goes up against Italian Camila Giorgi in the first round.

Dominika Cibulkova and Victoria Azarenka are on a collision course to play for the first time since the Slovak's upset over the Belarusian at the 2012 French Open.

Champion in 2010, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki is seeded 11th and is drawn to play fifth seed and local hope Eugenie Bouchard in the third round.
