Second seed Makarova, of Russia, defeated American Lauren Davis 6-2 6-4 at the WTA International event in Washington.

The left-hander was untroubled by Davis, winning the first 13 points of the match as she careered out to a 4-0 lead at the hard-court tournament.

While Davis was the first to break serve in set two to go 4-3 up, Makarova's response was emphatic - reeling off the next three games via two breaks to seal a straight sets win in one hour 24 minutes.

Makarova will face compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals, after the fifth seed eased past Japanese qualifier Hiroko Kuwata 6-3 6-3.

Sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova progressed to the last eight, after seeing off Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-4 7-5.

Kuznetsova blew a match point in the 10th game of the second set but, serving for the match for a second time, the two-time major winner held to love to earn a quarter-final date with King.

King upset American compatriot Christina McHale 6-1 6-3 in one hour 22 minutes, with the world number 76 reaching a Tour-level quarter-final for the third time this season.
