Woods has played two PGA Tour tournaments since a three-month lay-off to recover from undergoing the knife - getting cut at the Quicken Loans National, before placing 69th at The Open Championship at Hoylake in July.

The 14-time major winner, still ranked 10th despite large periods of inactivity, said he fast-tracked his recovery, meaning he needs to spend more time in the gym.

"Most of the people I've talked to who've had the procedure have no idea how I'm back here playing. They just can't understand that," Woods said, ahead of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

"But also, again when you have great protocols and you do everything perfectly, everything fell into place.

"I was able to get back but now it's just continuing and I still need to get much stronger than I am now and I still need to get much more explosive than I am now.

"That's just time."
Woods said while he was still hitting good shots, his contingency plans on holes needed to improve.

"Everything needs to get a little bit better. Just got to get more efficient at what I'm doing," he said.

"My good shots are still really good.
"My bad shots need to be in positions where I know I should miss the golf ball instead of places where I have been missing it, and there's obviously short sides and fat sides, and making sure I miss the ball on the correct side, depends on where the flag is.

"And that's something I haven't done as consistently or as well as I'd like to."

Woods said he was trying to keep his waning form in perspective, as he tees up for his third tournament since March.

"I just need to keep progressing. This is only my third tournament back from, you know, a back surgery," he said.

"That's something I try to keep in mind, because I've been in these situations before with my previous surgeries and it takes a little bit of time."
