The Brazilian has been unable to take full advantage of Williams' improved pace as they have become the closest challengers to Mercedes' dominance.

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas has been the one to claim four successive podiums, while Massa has seen his chances dashed early in three of the last five races.

A big shunt with Force India's Sergio Perez on the final lap in Canada saw him crash into the barriers, he was then wiped out by Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari at Silverstone and had a first-lap collision with McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen at the German Grand Prix.

His fifth-place finish in Hungary was a relief for the experienced driver and a result he desperately needed.

"If we look what's happened in the last races it's a nice relief to finish a race and score some reasonable points," said Massa. "For sure I needed to have that clean race.

"It was important for me. I took a lot of care on the first lap and we finished, so that's important."

He was, however, frustrated not to secure a first podium finish of the campaign, with the Williams struggling at the Hungaroring.

"[It's] definitely not enough," he added. "We didn't have a car to fight with Red Bull and Ferrari, even though we finished in front of one Ferrari.

"The car was not so competitive, just too slow."
