New boss: Cho set to become new PyeongChang 2018 organising chief
28.07.2014 LISTEN

Cho Yang-ho, who led PyeongChang's successful bid to host the 2018 winter Olympic Games, has been nominated to serve as the new chief executive of the event in South Korea.

Cho, the chairman of shipping company Hanjin Group, is set to replace Kim Jin-Sun, who resigned last week. A vice-president of the Korean Olympic Committee, Cho has been the president of the Korea Table Tennis Association since 2008 and the vice-president of the Asian Table Tennis Union since 2009.

His links to sport are thought to have put him in front of bureaucrat Chung Chang-soo, who was previously named as a candidate.

Cho, 65, initially turned down the opportunity to succeed Kim. However, with the new chief of the organising committee set to be elected at a general congress later this week, Cho has now relented.

'Now that I've agreed to take on the job as the chief organiser, I will dedicate myself to ensure a successful Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, relying on my experience as the top bid official,' Cho said.

'Many people in and outside Korea recommended that I take this position and I also wanted to keep the promise I'd made with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to work for a successful Olympics here.'
