The opening batsman's position came under yet more scrutiny after England were beaten by India in the second Test at Lord's on Monday to go 1-0 down in the five-match series.

Former England batsman Pietersen stated in his column in The Telegraph on Saturday that out-of-sorts Cook should relinquish his role as skipper for the best interests of English cricket.

But speaking on the eve of the third Test at the Ageas Bowl, Cook reiterated his stance that he would not resign as he attempts to silence his critics.

He said: "My position remains the same and I'm desperate to carry on because I love being England captain and it is an honour.

"Until the time where I don't feel I can carry on or someone taps me on the shoulder that's what I'll do."

When asked about Pietersen's comments, Cook told reporters: "The last three of four weeks everyone has been saying that, so he's no different to anyone else.

"I'd much rather them say nice things about me but they've been through it themselves and they have been criticised in the past.

"I'm a strong-willed guy who doesn't take much notice of what is said from the commentary box or in the media.

"I've just got to be true to myself. It would be good for me to get through this tough period as a person, a captain and a leader."

Cook revealed that Stuart Broad will be fit enough to feature in the third Test in Southampton, when Jos Buttler will make his debut in the absence of injured wicketkeeper Matt Prior - who has opted to take a break from the game.
