The world number four had struggled with illness prior to the grass-court grand slam and, after his quarter-final loss to his fellow Swiss, opted to rest rather than compete in the remainder of the clay-court season.

That meant Australian Open champion Wawrinka withdrew from the Swiss Open in Gstaad, but he is feeling refreshed and ready for the hard-court tournaments that begin next month.

Toronto hosts the ATP 1000 Canadian Open starting on August 3, and Wawrinka is happy to have recharged his batteries - especially with the US Open and Davis Cup semi-finals on the horizon.

"I need to be ready for the last few months of the season," he said. "It's a long series and it will be tough for sure. It will be another big challenge.

"I'm trying to be fit and to do everything possible not to be injured.

"I've had some rest and that's important. I also did some work with my fitness trainer but not a lot on court just yet.

"I started tennis only a few days ago. I'll leave next week for Toronto."
