Las Vegas chief: Mayweather Promotions get Nevada license
24.07.2014 LISTEN

Mayweather Promotions was granted a Nevada promoter's license in a unanimous vote by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Floyd Mayweather's next fight, a Sept. 13 rematch against Marcos Maidana, will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, which has promoted all of Mayweather's fights since 2007.

Mayweather already planned to fight again Sept. 13 at MGM Grand before his May 3 win over Maidana at that venue.

Mayweather voiced plans to split from Golden Boy after Richard Schaefer, the company's former CEO, resigned. But the promotional company, headed by longtime Mayweather rival Oscar De La Hoya, already had the September date at MGM Grand reserved.

The move is a latest in a series of maneuvers that suggest Mayweather is close to taking control of his late-career promotions, or at least positioning himself to do so if necessary.

Mayweather Promotions also obtained a New York promoter's license this month.

Mayweather told Nevada commissioners that his goal in applying for a promoter's license is continue bringing big fights to Las Vegas after his active boxing career concludes. His contract with Showtime has three more fights through 2015.

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe emphasized that the company would act as a promoter, not a manager.
