JUL 24, 2014 LISTEN

Believe it or not but disappointed former Ghana internationals are threatening to vent their spleen on the current national team over the failure of President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill a promise to dish out GH¢1.7 million for them to share.

The Ghanaian lead made the pledge at a presidential farewell dinner held on May 23 to send-off the Black Stars ahead of their departure to Brazil to participate at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

'It is said that a nation that does not honour its heroes is a nation not worth dying for. As a token for our gratitude for the service you gave to your country, I wish to assure you that your services have not been forgotten and I have asked the Chief of Staff and the Minister of Finance to make GH¢ 1.7m available for you,' President Mahama told a group of old players led by Wilberforce Mfum and Rev. Osei Kofi.

'I don't believe in curses and I don't believe that any of you has cast a curse on this country,' the president added amid revealing that the amount covered the cup winning teams of 1963,1965,1978 and 1982 who had long agitated for rewards due them.

But it appears the president may have to brace up for the curse now if the promise is not granted quickly following media reports that the disgruntled old players have issued a warning to that effect.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports have explained reasons for the delay in distributing the promised cash to the beneficiaries and have assured the discontent old stars that they will each receive their cash soon.

'What happened was that a team was set up including some of the old players to list the names of the beneficiaries and because of how busy everybody was during the World Cup, they couldn't finish,' Michael Frimpong, PRO at the Sports Ministry explained.

'It's only yesterday that they submitted the list and we have handed over to Ministry of Finance who are processing the money and once we get it, we'll share it to them,' Mr. Frimpong added.
