Ghana To Make Historic 16th Appearance At The Commonwealth Games

Sprint Queen Janet Amponsah will be the flag bearer as Ghana makes a historic 16th appearance at the Commonwealth Games tonight.

Amponsah has been one of the most consistent performers in track and field this year, breaking the 200m national indoor record as well as setting new personal bests in the 100m and 200m respectively.

The Western Texas College student led Ghana's 4 x100m relay team to silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi India as a junior and is bidding to produce one of her best performances at the Games in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, more than 4,500 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories will parade during the ceremonial opening ceremony at Celtic Park in Glasgow.

Team has enjoyed one of the most successful pre Games camp ahead of the Games after spending three weeks in the Scottish city of Ayr, prior to the Games.

Athletes and officials have raved about the level of organisation, range of training facilities, feeding and accommodation provisions for the Team during their three week stay in the Scottish coastal city of Ayr.

Ghana will be represented by 89 athletes in the Games with athletes drawn from ten sporting disciplines, including athletics, boxing, shooting, taekwondo, table tennis, judo, swimming, badminton, cycling and weightlifting.

The Commonwealth Games are generally seen as a festival of sports and culture, with the athletes being exemplified as the personification of competitiveness and resilience.
