JUL 23, 2014 LISTEN

McAdoo has replaced Kevin Gilbride as Giants head coach Tom Coughlin's lead man on offence and speaking at the first training camp of the pre-season on Tuesday, wide receiver Victor Cruz was pleased with the changes.

The Giants had the fifth-worst offence in the NFL last season, scoring just 18.4 points per game, ahead of only New York-rivals the Jets (18.1), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (18), the Houston Texans (17.3) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (15.4).

Eventual Super Bowl champions the Seattle Seahawks scored 26.1 points per game, while fellow finalists the Denver Broncos (37.9) led the way on offence in 2013.

Under Gilbride, the Giants focused on longer passes but with McAdoo a convert of West Coast offence - which favours short passes and simple slanting runs to get the ball in the hands of receivers earlier - Coughlin's team is expected to be more proactive in 2014.

It is something Cruz is excited about.
"Any receiver would love to get the ball as early as possible, so you can see defenders coming and make them miss," the 27-year-old said.

"I love to catch the ball early with some space, so I'm definitely looking forward to it."

But Cruz was quick to stress that he still respected Gilbride, who retired at the end of last season after 10 years with the Giants.

"It's tough to put your finger on what happened [with the Giants offence last season]," Cruz said.

"Sometimes you just need a fresh start, sometimes you just need somebody new to come in and breathe life into the organisation and back into the offence, and I think that was it.

"I don't think coach [Kevin] Gilbride did anything wrong, I don't think...there was nothing he did or his offensive [systems] did- I just think we needed a fresh start and we got that."

Giants safety Antrel Rolle claimed the changes being introduced by McAdoo have already had an effect on the team's attacking players, which is rubbing off on the defensive players like himself.

"It's been great, our offence is moving in the right direction," Rolle said.

"Those guys seem to be excited about what they have in hand and we're excited for them also."

Rolle added he expects the Giants to be more competitive this year, after they finished third in the NFC East in 2013, three wins behind divisional victors the Philadelphia Eagles.

"This is one of the most talented teams I've ever been on, if not the most talented," he said.
