The Ed Carpenter Racing driver held off Tony Kanaan (Target Chip Ganassi Racing) over a three-lap sprint to the finish after a red flag late in the race.

Team Penske's Will Power claimed third place to close the gap on championship leader Helio Castroneves (Penske Racing), the pole-sitter who damaged his wing on the penultimate lap and finished 12th.

Castroneves (533 points) remains top of the standings, ahead of Power (520), Ryan Hunter-Reay (464), Simon Pagenaud (462) and Juan Pablo Montoya (428).

Conway's decision to switch from rain to alternate tyres on lap 43 was the key.

He overtook Justin Wilson and Josef Newgarden, who were both still on rain tyres, on lap 50 before holding off Kanaan.

"The tyre temperatures came in really fast and that's what you need in those types of conditions so I could just control it and not have to push too hard and enjoy those last few laps," Conway said.

The next round of the season is the Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on August 3.

The first race in Toronto had been held earlier on Sunday, after persistent rain had forced a postponement.

Sebastien Bourdais won the first race.
