McGirt carded a five-under-par 66, while Johnson shot a 67 to be one-stroke clear at 12 under overall after round two at the TPC Deere Run in Illinois.

Australian Steven Bowditch (67), and American pair Johnson Wagner (65) and Brian Harman (68) are tied for third at 11 under.

McGirt - searching for his first PGA Tour title - started his second round on the back nine and managed to hole two birdies to go with his two bogeys.

The 35-year-old fared much better on the front nine, shooting six birdies, with four of those coming in succession from the first hole to the fourth as he surged to the top.

Johnson - among three players tied for the lead overnight - secured another day at the summit on the back of seven birdies.

The 2012 champion could not match the 63 from his opening round but he still produced a solid performance to be tied with McGirt heading into the penultimate day.

Three shots further back is three-time champion Steve Stricker, who birdied five of his final nine holes to remain in contention.

Stricker birdied the first, third and fifth holes before going back-to-back at the seventh and eighth as he fired a six-under-par 65.

Todd Hamilton (69), Ryan Moore (67) and Rory Sabbatini (70) joined the 47-year-old at nine under.

Jerry Kelly (68), Robert Streb (69), Charles Howell III (68), Kevin Na (66), Kevin Tway (69) and Bud Cauley (67) rounded out the top 10.

Meanwhile, defending champion Jordan Spieth hit a 64 to be five shots off the pace at seven under for the tournament.
