As the countdown continues to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Ghana's David Accam continues to stake a huge claim for a place in the Black Stars team, after becoming the second highest Ghanaian goal scorer in Europe.

Accam's fellow Right to Dream (RtD) graduate, Abdul Majeed Waris, leads the scoring chart with nine goals, with Schalke O4's Kevin Prince in third place with six goals, and Andrew Ayew of Olympic Marseille with five goals.

Accam appears to be peaking at the right time for football's greatest tournament, after netting his seventh goal, to help Helsingborg defeat BK Hacken 4:2 in the Swedish top division last Sunday.

His seven goals have come in quick succession, with the Swedish Cup and League only getting underway last month.

Accam's decisive strike, in the victory over BK Hacken, was typical of what many Swedish league fans have come to accept as the Ghanaian's trademark goal. The 23-year old picked up a pass from the left flank before ghosting past his marker and hitting an unstoppable rocket into top corner, with the goalkeeper soundly beaten.

Accam, who honed his skills at the famed Right to Dream Academy, appears intent on maintaining his strong start to the season.

RtD Founder and CEO, Tom Vernon, praised Accam's performance, noting that he has certain qualities that are unmatched in the Ghanaian national team.

“I think David Accam has unique qualities compared to the current crop of Black Stars' players,” Tom Vernon said in an interview on Accra-based Power FM on Tuesday.

He added: “His ability to run past defenders and score goals gives him a big advantage.

“He is a winger just like Christian Atsu, but whereas Atsu can use his dribbling ability when he is stationary, Accam uses his amazing pace to get in behind defenders and score great goals on the counter attack.

“His goal this past weekend, was reminiscent of ten goals he scored last season and even in the early part of the current season.”

Accam's meteoric rise in the Swedish league has not gone unnoticed. He capped an impressive outing in his first full season in the top flight, scoring ten goals to help Helsingborg finish in the top five only last season.

Many have drawn comparisons between Accam and fellow Right to Dream graduate, Abdul Majeed Waris who also rose to prominence at Swedish side BK Hacken where he won the goal king award in 2012.

Waris has since become an instant hit with Black Stars' fans after he scored three crucial goals as Ghana qualified for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. Accam was an unused substitute in Ghana's World Cup qualifier against Sudan.

Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah, has been keeping tabs on the lethal winger's progress, and with several key players on the injury list or just returning to match action, David Accam could be the missing link in the Black Stars' team that will aim to bring glory for Ghana at the World Cup in June.
