Barnsley coach Danny Wilson has jumped to the defence of Emmanuel Frimpong who was sent off on his debut for the club over the weekend.

The Ghana international attracted two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off within the first 30 minute of the Championship defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Frimpong who had joined the Reds from Arsenal on Friday has been heavily criticized for his silly tackles that got him sent off on another debut.

But his new coach believes the 22-year-old will pick up vital lessons from his disappointing sending off to make him a hit at the Championship club.

“Let's hope he does [learn a lesson], but we can't jump on the boy for what happened,” Wilson said.

“He'll have to learn from it, but from my point of view I've got nothing to worry about.

“It's naive, but it wasn't malicious anyway. I think he was a little bit excited because it was his debut and there was a bit of over exuberance in there, but they were two innocuous fouls in my view.

“But he's a great player with a fantastic pedigree – and we're lucky to have him.

“It's not the debut he or we could have wanted, but it's up to us to harness that potential.”

Frimpong is now suspended for Barnsley's next game at home to Ipswich Town as they continue to fight to escape relegation.
