Accra, Sep. 18, GNA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports on Tuesday donated footballs to Senior High Schools in the Greater Accra Region towards the promotion of world's most popular sport.

The gesture represents the second phase of the distribution of the nation's 80,000-alloted footballs donated by renowned automobile firm, Hyundai, as part of the legacies of the first ever Mundial staged on the continent in South Africa in 2010.

The South Korean firm, one of the main sponsors of the tournament that Ghana's Black Stars exited at the quarter final stage, gave out 234,000 footballs to four countries including Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Togo.

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports said the package to the Senior High Schools in the capital falls under the ambit of the second phase of the distribution process which will see the giving out of 40,000 footballs to promote the game.

The first phase he recalled involved Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA's), National Youth Authority, Ghana Football Association (GFA) amongst others.

He said the choice of recipients falls in line with the decentralization approach by his outfit and the Ministry of Education.

All the 82 Senior High Schools the Greater Accra region each received 15 footballs for talent nurturing in their respective institutions.

The Deputy Minister said other institutions from other regions and District Assemblies will have their turn of the distribution of football by the end of October 2012.

Joseph Amoah, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) commended the Ministries of Education and Youth and Sport for the kind gesture, assuring that the footballs will be put to good use.
