Stars slip to third position in Africa rankings

Accra, Sept. 5, GNA – Ghana's Black Stars have dropped to the third position in the African rankings behind Cote d'Ivoire and Algeria.

The Stars started the year behind their western neighbours, Cote d'Ivoire but have been overtaken by the Desert Foxes of Algeria, according to the latest rankings released on Wednesday by world soccer governing body, Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA).

According to the rankings, the Stars moved a place up with a point haul of 714 points against Algeria, now on 734 points and moved six places up. The Stars are however ranked 31st in the world and Algeria on the 28th position.

Cote d'Ivoire, the only African team in the world's top 20 occupy the 16th position with 912 points.

Mali (710 points), Libya (666 points), Egypt (634 points), Tunisia (625 points), Zambia (624 points), Gabon (617 points) and Nigeria (523 points) complete the top 10 ranked teams in Africa in that order.

Spain maintain their position at number one on the global rankings, followed by Germany, England, Portugal, Uruguay, Italy, Argentina, Netherlands, Croatia and Denmark in the top 10.
