Can Lions escape relegation den?

Can Lions escape relegation den?

After condemning Wassaman United to relegation in their first year of premiership experience, Berekum Arsenal now face their own date with destiny in Accra as their premiership status hangs loosely in the balance.

The relegation dogfight looks even more delicate as Kpando Heart of Lions have suddenly been caught in the drop zone after the league’s governing body Monday released its update leagued table which shows an even tighter battle for survival.

Arsenal lie third from bottom, a point adrift of fellow strugglers Bechem United, as the Glo Premier League heads into the final tango at seven of eight centres on Saturday, with two relegation places waiting to be filled.

The official table by the Premier League Board has Arsenal on 30 points and Bechem United on 31 points, while Tudu Mighty Jets trail both on 27 points. Even Heart of Lions, who occupy fifth from bottom with just 32 points, are now caught in the battle for life.

On account of this, Saturday’s final games have assumed immense importance for Jets, Arsenal, Bechem United and Lions who all make away trips to play dethroned champions Berekum Chelsea at Berekum, Hearts of Oak in Accra, New Edubiase at Bekwai and Wassaman at Tarkwa respectively.

However, at no point has the demand for high performance been so crucial as Saturday’s games have imposed on them. And with each ticking of the clock, the Sword of Damocles drops slowly, threatening all of Lions, Bechem, Arsenal and Jets with an imminent chop.

Kotoko’s game against Tema Youth has been scheduled for Sunday to mark the Porcupine Warriors’ coronation as champions, the result of the match with merely for record purposes.

But there are good reasons for Medeama, Ashantigold, Aduana Stars, Hearts, Chelsea and New Edubiase to give their final matches their all as the prize of Top 4 dangles before them.

When Aduana meet Liberty at Dormaa-Ahenkro, and Dwarfs host Ashantigold, the motivation for victory will be to finish among the Top 4 contenders more than any relegation worries.
