A 2012 political tolerance gala soccer has been launched in Accra by the former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama to promote peace, tolerance and unity among political parties.
Speaking via video conference, the former vice president underscored the need for political tolerance in the country adding that “Ghana has earned some credibility in terms of peace and stability on the African continent and it is imperative that we call for political tolerance as we approach this year's elections”.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama noted with great concern how political intolerance has plunged nations in Africa into war, poverty and total misery.
He said the theme “Promoting Political Tolerance, Peace and Unity in Ghana before, during and after the 2012 general elections” was timely and appropriate.
The former vice president called on all Ghanaians to promote peace and be bold to condemn any acts of violence that will bring about division in the country.
On his part, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Afotey Agbo welcomed the concept of collaboration between Pro-Image Communication, the organizers of the event, MUSIGA , NASFAAG, Old Black Star Players to conscientize Ghanaians on the need to tolerate divergence views in all political discourse.
He said the role of soccer in unifying Ghanaians cannot be under-estimated and that soccer brings Ghanaians from all political divides under one umbrella.
The Chief Executive officer of Pro-Image Communications, Mr. Nathaniel Ebo Nsarko noted how soccer can bring people together by contributing to peace and security.
“While ethnic and religious differences have sparked sectarian conflicts in some part of Africa, soccer more than any other sport has helped people to look beyond their differences and celebrate”, he said.
