Take action to revamp Boxing - Retired Boxer

Mr Albert Atutiga, Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), has called for a pragmatic reorientation of amateur boxing to revive the sport in the country.

He said boxing is one of the most single sporting disciplines which has put Ghana into international fame and given a boost to the economy through tourists visiting the country but regretted that the nation's boxing is now dying since officialdom had failed to start from the grassroots.

Mr Atutiga who was the National Boxing Champion in 1971 and 1976, told the GNA Sports in Tamale that "boxing is an endurance sport and if one has no muscular power, stamina and endurance, that person is bound to lose fights".

He bemoaned the inability of the country to produce a single world champion at the moment and called on the government to pump more funds into sports development to reverse the trend.

He called on the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council to join hands and to comb the length and breadth of the country to unearth talents who could bring honours to the country.
