Former Ghana striker Ibrahim Tanko has become the first African to coach a German Bundesliga side after taking temporary charge of FC Cologne on Thursday.

The 33-year-old was appointed as an assistant coach of the club last week; an appointment which made huge waves in Germany.

But with substantive trainer Stale Solbakken scheduled to arrive next week, Tanko has taken full charge of pre-season training.

Tanko, a former Borrusia Dortmund player, prematurely ended his playing because of a knee injury four years ago and turned to coaching.

The ex-Ghana international striker Ibrahim Tanko was appointed as an assistant coach of German Bundesliga side Cologne after resigning from his post as co-coach of Japanese top-flight side Urawa Red Diamonds at the end of last season.
