Seven-member LOC to organize Africa Regional Cricket Tournament

February 08, 2011 Accra, Feb. 8, GNA - The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) on Tuesday, inaugurated a seven-member Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to oversee and supervise the organization and hosting of the 2011 Edition of the Africa Regional Division Three T20 Cricket Tournament in Accra.

The Committee will be headed by Dr William Ampofo with Ben Nunoo Mensah as the Head of Operations in charge of Transportation and Accommodation.

Other members of the Committee include, Mr Edinam Nutsugah, Events and Competitions, Mr Bhupinder Singh Brar, Technical and Grounds, Mr Sapan Patel, Marketing and Sponsorship, Charles Aryeh, a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Kwame Asare, a member of the GCA and Francis Asare, to be in charge of the Secretariat.

A four member sub-committee made up of Veronica Commey, Charles Osei Asibey, William Ezah and Darlington Acolatse will assist the Committee to execute its functions.

Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, inaugurating the Committee, said the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to grant Ghana the hosting right was a confirmation of the good relations between GCA and the ICC.

He said Ghana has over the years' put up an impressive performance in Cricket at the international level in a manner that has ensured the development of the sport in the country.

Nii Dua noted that the tournament will bring further progress to the sport in the country, since facilities will be improved with players also getting abreast with modern trends of the sport.

The Deputy Minister said government is prepared to support the GCA in every endeavor to ensure the success of the tournament.

He said government was keen on providing every sporting discipline the opportunity to develop and congratulated the GCA for their role in the development of the sport in the country.

Dr William Ampofo, President of GCA said the tournament will also assess the efficiency of the current GCA administration and its ability to host international tournaments.

He said the tournament will also offer the GCA the opportunity to upgrade some of its facilities and gain public recognition.

Seven countries are expected to participate in the tournament, with Rwanda, Lesotho and Cameroon in Group A, while Gambia, Morocco, Mali and Seychelles make up Group B.

The tournament fixed for February 23-28 at the Achimota Cricket Oval, Accra, will see the winner joining Ghana together with other countries to participate in the Division Two T20 League in Benoni, South Africa in April this year.
