Accra, Dec. 16, GNA-The fourth annual Nana Wereko Ampem II Memorial Open Golf
Championship would be played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday, December
20.
Mr Kwabena Oteng-Aboagye, General Manager of the Achimota Golf Club who
disclosed this in Accra on Wednesday, said the competition which was open to amateur
golfers throughout the country, would be staged in honour and memory of Nana Wereko
Ampem, former President of the Achimota Golf Club who died in 2005.
He said Nana Ampem, who was also the Board Chairman of Barclays Bank Ghana
Limited and Chancellor of the University of Ghana, has contributed immensely to the
development and promotion of the sport in the country.
"Nana who was an avid golfer, contributed immensely to the development and promotion
of the sport and as a sign of respect, an annual competition had been instituted in his
honour", he said.
Five prizes would be awarded in the Men's category while three would be given in the
Ladies event.
There would also be prizes for the 'Longest Drive on Hole 18' and 'Nearest to the Pin on
Hole 17'.
Meanwhile Mr Mike Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club would deliver his
Christmas and New Year messages at the championship.
