Cape Coast, Dec. 12, GNA - University of Cape Coast (UCC) is to host the handball and volleyball championship of the West Africa University Games (WAUG), from December 13 to December 23, 2009.
The University on Friday therefore commissioned two volleyball pitches and two handball courts in preparation towards the Games.
Professor Sam Yehoah Mensah, Dean of Physical Sciences of UCC, who commissioned the facilities constructed by the Local Organising Committee (LOC), commended the contractors for the good work done and hoped the visitors will have conducive facilities for their sporting events.
Earlier at a media launch on Friday to highlight preparations made so far, Dr Kojo Asamoah, Chairman of Sports and Recreation Committee of UCC said 15 volleyball and handball teams from public universities in the West African sub regions will participate in the 10-day WAUG championship.
The participating countries include Burkina-Faso, Nigeria, Benin, Cote d' Voire, Senegal and Ghana.
Dr Asamoah said meanwhile the national Handball and Volleyball Associations have been contacted to provide officials to officiate the Games, adding that, the "so -called lesser-known sports" could be fully developed through such competitions to raise teams to participate in international events like the Olympic Games.
The four public universities to represent Ghana are the University of Ghana, University for Development Studies (UDS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and UCC.
About 350 to 400 sportsmen and women are expected to participate in the various events.
