The finals of the WAFU Inter Club Competition, otherwise known as EYADEMA Cup will come up between December 10-13, 2009 at Stade de Kuege, Lome Togo.
According to a statement signed by WAFU press officer, Debo Akinyemi, the date and venue for the finals were ratified at a recent meeting between the Togolese President, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe and WAFU President, Dr. Amos Adamu, at the presidential villa, Lome Togo.
In the running for the trophy are ASFA YENNEGA of Burkina Faso, Horoya Football Club, Guinnea, Liberty Professionals of Ghana and Togolese League Champions, Asko de Kara.
Speaking at the meeting, President Gnassingbe said it was a thing of joy that the competition was being revived, stressing “we are delighted that EYADEMA Cup is bouncing back. It is a sign that WAFU is also back to life''.
The youthful Togolese leader said his administration would do everything to sustain the competition as it will help in developing football at Club level in the West African Region.
He said that all the member countries of WAFU stand to gain a lot from the revived EYADEMA Cup.
“We are not only pleased that the competition is named after one of the illustrious sons of Africa but also by the fact that a platform is being created for clubs to parade their skills in healthy regional contest as is the case in other zones.
"We must indeed continue to show gratitude to WAFU for this great idea.''
In his response, Dr. Adamu thanked the Togolese president for accepting to resume the sponsorship of the competition in this period of global economic recession, describing him as “a true lover of football development''.
The WAFU president said he was determined to ensure that the region reclaims dominance at all levels of football in the continent of Africa, noting that the EYADEMA Cup and other competitions on WAFU calendar are vital tools towards achieving this.
“We have just one mission in WAFU and that is to be the undisputable number one soccer region in Africa. Already, WAFU has the concentration of high flying soccer countries like Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Togo.
We shall continue to leverage on the strength of these great countries in our bid to turn WAFU to the new Soccer power centre in Africa.''
