Asamoah Gyan has put his fine start to the season down to his new found confidence which he says has everything to do with Stade Rennes boss Frederic Antoneti.

Gyan hit a stunning long range effort for his fifth goal of the current season over the weekend and says the club and the boss deserve credit for the manner they stuck with him in difficult times.

“What I lacked in the past was fitness but after the efforts of Rennes who sent a doctor on pre-season with me, I am now fully fit,” he told KickOffGhana.com.

“When I am fit too, I am a very confident person and when I am confident I play my best football especially with the way I am mentally strong now.”

Gyan's daily fear especially with a world cup to play is that he becomes crocked when it matters most but he says so long as he stays on his feet, he wants to have his most prolific season yet.

“When you have a lot of injuries it plays on your mind But I am praying to God it doesn't happen. I should have been a much better player for now if not for the injuries but I am not giving up yet.”

The player has also set lofty goals for the season. “I have started well so at this stage I will take a goal every game, he says with a smile. Realistically however a goal every three games will not be a bad return.”
