Polo Seeks Peaceful Polls Through Soccer

Ghanaian football legend, Mohammed Polo, is soliciting for massive corporate sponsorship to roll out a special football tournament aimed at promoting peaceful general elections in December.

This special tournament will involve select sides from the Northen and Southern sectors of the country.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday, Polo said he decided to organise this tournament because of the realisation that football is an effective tool that could be used to promote peace and togetherness.

“Too many times during this election period, we have had pockets of violence between members of political parties. We need peace to be able to move this nation forward.

Our political stability in this nation has made us a shining example, not only in the sub- region, but all over the continent.

Football has proven over the years to bring people of different races and creeds together over the years and I want to use this match to bring together people of different political inclinations,” he explained.

According to Polo, also known as the Dribbling Magician, just like he and his peers bequethed a legacy of good football to the generations after them, political leaders of today must also ensure that the nation remains the peaceful one that it is today, even after they are dead and gone.

“It is totally wrong for people to assault each other physically and sometimes kill because of political differences. We are all one people and we need to build this nation together,” he said.

Making up the Northern sector team are retired and active footballers from the Northern, Upper West, Upper East, Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions, while the Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern, Western and Central regions make up the Southern sector team.

The tournament likely to come off next month, will be a two-leg affair and is expected to attract representatives of all the political parties in the country.
